Do you have problem shifting into gear and the transmission seems fine? This is likely your problem. This cable over time can corrode under the shift boot mounted above the transmission and its need replaced in order to have proper shift function. Easy to install, we even have the MINI factory cable tool to do the job.
Replace both cables in order to resolve any additional problem.
